New Wrinkles Journal #4

So many great songs. Songs that make you want to dance. Songs that tug at your heartstrings. Songs that cause you to remember. Songs that bring a smile to your face, or even make you laugh out loud.

Songs that have been in your life forever.

Among other things, songs are what brings New Wrinkles together. Songs are the light at the end of the tunnel.

Light in the end of the tunnel. Hope and freedom

The tunnel is months of hard work, practice, repetition, trial, error, laughter, exasperation, goosebumps, and anticipation.

At the end is a dynamite program that is filled with pure joy, that exceeds expectations, and that appears to be effortless fun!

In the meantime…

In the tunnel…

There are the songs.

All day long, in the middle of the night, at the most unexpected times and places, THE SONGS will have you humming, singing, tapping your feet, sighing, and generally driving you to the brink of insanity.  All those words to memorize!

Songs you have known all of your life, but now you must learn new rhythms, new harmonies, new contexts, different lyrics, cuts, edits, consonants, vowels, counting, cutoffs – can we still do this correctly when the accompanist starts playing the actual accompaniment instead of just our parts?

Once we are doing it correctly, can we smile, keep our heads up, and do whatever you’ve-got-to-be-kidding movements the Director tells us to do? And then change them when he decides he wants something different?

Of course we can; and we will.

We love our Directors. We love each other. We love the audience. We love the show.

And we love the songs.

Occasionally there are songs we have never seen or heard before. (I know. Hard to believe, right?) These “new” songs are sometimes challenging at first, but usually they become favorites.

OK, I admit. Sometimes there are songs about which we declare that we will be SO GLAD when we are done singing that song. There is usually at least one of those in every show.

Guess what. Those are the ones that will stick in our brains FOR-EVER. We will joke about them and remember them for the rest of our lives.

We are surrounded by songs. They may not be expressed in the “traditional” way that we think of as “music.” Every life, every story, all of nature – it is all songs. All around us.

A biblical prophet named Isaiah mentions this phenomenon.

He said, “For you shall go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and the hills before you shall break forth into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.” (Isaiah 55:12)

Listen to the songs. They are leading you to the light at the end of the tunnel.

  1. “We are surrounded by songs. They may not be expressed in the “traditional” way that we think of as “music.” Every life, every story, all of nature – it is all songs.” I love the way you expressed this. Thanks.
