In the Summer of 2022

From flywichita.com

In the summer of 2022

I stood at the teetering edge of the continent

letting the rhythmic pulse of the Pacific sting my toes

while I considered

the simultaneous strangeness and familiarity

of life in 2022.

. . .

In the summer of 2022

I rummaged restlessly through the brown paper bags of my soul

looking for ruptures and torn places

hoping for healing and strength

listening to the ominous rustlings

of life in 2022.

. . .

In the summer of 2022

I stood in the towering heat of the central valley

feeling the dryness of my bones

while I lifted my eyes to the unmoving mountains

and whispered my petitions and pleas

for life in 2022.

    • Thank you, Gary. I’m not sure why this piece came to me addressing a season yet to come, it just did. I have no particular plans for this summer. A lot can happen in six months!

      Ed.

  8. “the brown paper bags of my soul” – this is such a good line!

  9. Sticky tape is good for mending and healing paper bags……

    • True. I always keep several different colors of sticky tape on hand for that very reason. I keep paper bags around for decades that way.

      • That’s right. never throw a good bag out…..

      • Especially the bigger bag in which the other bags are kept…

      • You are a well-organized houseman…..

  10. …don’t tell anyone…
