We are not just ourselves
Each of us
is a coalition
of those who have come before
Besides the biology and genetics
of who you are
the nature and the nurture
the family and the village
the education and the experiences
where you have been
who you have known
what you have seen and heard
the choices you have made
the things you did and didn’t do
whether you liked it or not
It’s all you
Who you are in this moment
is because of every moment
moment by moment
that came before
in the life
and the living
that have all added up to
you
*Inspired by Beaton’s “The Blogger’s Creed” at Becoming the Muse
with all that history in our DNA no wonder, Ed, we are so unique; Dr, Seuss summed it up beautifully π

Yes, he did. Funny thing – I wrote the poem based on my own reaction to Beaton’s blog post; then I went looking for a graphic by typing “it all adds up to you” into the Google image search. The Dr. Seuss quote came up. Perfect!

Great poem. We are all a unique collection of DNA. You can’t be anything else but yourself.

True, and yet we all seem to want to be someone other than who we are.

Do we think we’re not good enough?……

Wow I love this, you express ideas that where between the lines as I wrote that creed…
The sum total of that which makes us, US.
Glad to have been an inspiration to the line of thinking which led down to the creation of this
Cheers

Thank you, B. I think about this a lot, actually; how much everything around me is part of who I am. Lately, Beaton became part of me! Cheers to you, too!

What I find fascinating is that 2 people in the same family with the same environment can have the same experiences and yet see them in such disparate ways. The perspective and the attitude associated with these moments can make a world of difference. And the older we get, the more books we read, the more subjects and skills we learn, the more people we meet, the friends we choose, the activities we invest ourselves in, the more unique we get.

Amazing, isn’t it? I am the youngest of five children, and it has always surprised me how the five of us “turned out” so differently. Certainly, our perceptions, attitudes, and inclinations – what goes on in our heads – adds much to the outcomes of who we become.

There were just two sisters in my family, and we are so different in many ways, but when we get together, our similarities come out, and we have such fun! (If we were exactly alike, we’d be bored. π )
