New Wrinkles Journal #7

NW_Family_2019

Family.

Who is my family?

Naturally – literally – there are all of those who bear traditional family titles such as parents, siblings, cousins, aunts/uncles, et al.

But also there are the many with whom I have developed close relationships in various endeavors and circumstances. For example, I have a “work family” and a “school family” and a “neighborhood family.”

I also have an amazing and wondrous New Wrinkles family!

We spend a lot of time together, so we get to know each other pretty well. I would not say that all of us know everything about all of us, but we know enough to be deeply and genuinely interested in what is happening in each others’ lives.

When good things happen, we share the joy. When sad things happen, we share the sorrow. We are there for each other.

We rejoice together over the arrival of new grandchildren (and great-grandchildren!).

We congratulate each other about birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, and many other events and accomplishments.

We grieve with each other over the loss of loved ones.

We cheer each other up through hard times.

We encourage each other when we are dealing with sickness and major health challenges.

We laugh at each others’ jokes (usually), we tease, we prank, we are silly, and we are serious.

Given the high potential for stress and conflict in our “artistic” environment, with sensitive egos and inherent competition and performance anxieties and physical challenges, we handle ourselves quite well, in my opinion.

Sure, we have the occasional kerfuffle, but that is to be expected among family. We come through these momentary aggravations stronger, more determined to work as a team, and more convinced that we belong together. In other words, our love for each other expands as a result of getting a workout in good times and not-so-good times.

Our respect for each other is magnified by our mutual understanding and recognition of our own humanity and the humanity of those around us.

Also, just like a “real” family, we have ancestors and descendants. We revere those who have come before us, and we look forward with great joy and anticipation to those who will come after us.

We strive to be worthy of the history of New Wrinkles.

We have received an inestimable inheritance from the many talented souls who have paved the way for us.

We want to leave a legacy and a heritage that will always be honorable and worthy of celebration.

We want to build traditions and memories that will live on as cherished family stories.

We want the love we have for each other to be real and strong and enduring, and we want that love to be clearly visible to all witnesses, perhaps especially to our audience but most importantly to each other.

We are blessed and honored to claim the privilege of being part of the story of New Wrinkles.

And…

at the risk of getting this song into your heads for the rest of the week…

We Are Family.
