New Wrinkles Journal #3

A show about my home state, California?  Who could resist?

New Wrinkles’ 31st season was the second year I was privileged to participate in the show. The Production Team chose a theme based on the fact that California was the 31st state to be admitted to the United States of America. [See what they did there?  31st season… 31st state… Yeah.]

The show was called “California Dreamin’.”  It held a personal attraction for many of the cast members who were born and raised in California. I was born in California, but I spent much of my life (between the ages of 6 and 46) living elsewhere. Now it appears I am going to spend my twilight years here, too. For better or worse, I love California.

The storyline our Writer created was about a family that moved to California from Texas during the 1930s. However, the opening sequence of the show took us all the way back to the founding days of the state (last half of the 19th century) with a nod to pioneering, gold prospecting, and farming, plus some First Nations and Hispanic recognition. Let me just say, it is challenging to put 170 years worth of history into a two-hour program, let alone go back even further.

“California, Here I Come!”

The balance of the first act included a Hollywood sequence, a San Francisco sequence, and a patriotic set. I was delighted to be selected for the opening solo in “A Million Dreams,” which was intended to depict the idea of coming to California with great dreams of a prosperous future. This was the core message of the show.

“A Million Dreams”

In the second act, we hit the beach, then we focused on Disney for the finale. After a soloist presented “California” (Debby Boone’s version), the full chorus dove into a Beach Boys medley, then smaller groups followed with several other songs about life on the seashore, summertime, and sunshine.

For example:

“Under the Boardwalk”

“Beyond the Sea”

“It Never Rains in Southern California”

We wrapped it up with selections such as “Be Our Guest,” “A Whole New World,” and “I’m a Believer.”

“California Dreamin’” was a greatly entertaining program. I was blessed to be part of this cast for my second season, and New Wrinkles’ 31st.
